MEL NAME student selected as SNAME David A. O’Neil Scholar

NAME Master of Engineering Leadership student Mohammad Mostofa Sowkot Imran has been awarded the David A. O’Neil Scholarship from the Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (SNAME). The scholarship awards him $5,000 to study Naval Architecture at UBC, and attendance at the SNAME annual conference in October 2021. SNAME is the leading international organization in the maritime industry, advancing global knowledge exchange, engineering education, and research relating to the field, including scholarship opportunities and awards.

Imran comes to the UBC MEL program in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering after ten years working in the marine industry as a Naval Architect. While completing his B.Sc. in Engineering from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, he served as an apprentice with Khulna Shipyard Limited and Ananda Shipyard & Shipways Ltd. After graduation, he worked as a naval architect and project manager in Marine House Ltd on oil tanker, passenger, container, cargo vessel, high-speed boat, research vessel, minesweeper, hospital boat, tug, and barge projects. After completing the MEL in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, Imran wants to devote himself to the enhancement of emerging technology, sustainability, and leadership in zero-carbon ship design, operation, and logistics.
